About The Black Rider
The Black Rider play is inspired by a Bohemian folktale of a young clerk who makes a Faustian contract with the Devil. Wilhelm (the clerk), is in love with Katchen, the daughter of the old forester, Kuno. Kuno wants his daughter to marry a hunter so Katchen insists that a marksmanship contest be held to determine the best hunter, hoping that Wilhelm might have a chance to win. Wilhelm, however cannot hit the broad side of a barn - until he is approached by a "dark horseman" called Pegleg. Pegleg arranges to give Wilhelm some "magic bullets," mysteriously guaranteed to hit anything Wilhelm aims at except for one bullet, which Pegleg earmarks for his own purposes. Wilhelm wins the initial contest, & his bride's hand, but another shooting match is scheduled for their wedding day. In Freischutz, divine intervention prevents Wilhelm from killing his bride, & he gets off the hook with a stern warning about dealing with the devil.
The Black Rider, is a powerful theater piece in which the words, the music, & the stage design & direction share equally important roles, creating a magical combination which plays out like a piece of aural/visual poetry. Like poetry, it doesn't reveal all its meanings at once. Rich in ambiguities, it is a work of imagination that requires the viewer to meet it at least half way. Both the music, by Tom Waits, & the direction/design by long time avant garde director Robert Wilson are eclectic, drawing on a wide variety of sources to create a mesmerizing theatrical experience. Waits' sometimes dissonant tunes evoke folk songs, African tribal music, Kurt Weill, German cabaret, klezmer, the hurdy gurdy sounds of the circus, even including an electric saw. Wilson uses distortions both of perspective & of size, shadow play, smoke, vivid lighting, & a range of colors that evoke German Expressionism, all to create images sometimes funny/haunting, always creating stage magic that is both traditional & new.
