About The Imporantce of Being Earnest

Oscar Wilde's brilliant comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest” is an exuberant portrait of late Victorian upper crust social manner. This wildly witty & ever popular classic weaves a hilariously tangled web of alter egos & mistaken identities. It is set in England during the old Victorian era, & its primary source of humor is based upon the main character John Worthing, who leads a double life as “Ernest” while he is in London & “Jack” while in the country, which causes comical confusion when he tries to woo the lovely/beautiful Gwendolen. The mayhem multiplies a great deal when Algernon also adopts the alias “Ernest,” & sets out to visit the lovely/beautiful Cecily at Jack's country home. Since they have both assumed the same false identities, they soon learn of the consequences of their actions when they fall in love with their ladies, & attempt to find an honorable way of getting around the fact they aren't exactly whom they have claim to be. The tables quickly turn on these mischievous young men as their bachelorhood & their aliases are stripped from them, despite the duo's best efforts to hide it! As the deception deepens with every moment, the audience enjoys the quandary that the two have created, with a most humorous outcome.

It was 1rst performed for the public on February 14th, 1895 at the St. James' Theatre in London. The play is regarded by many critics & scholars as being the wittiest play created in the English language.
The play has clever casting & in conjunction with a script that sparkles & crackles with memorable Oscar Wilde one liners. Combined with a wonderful selection of costumes/wardrobe & top-notch lighting, nicely rounding out this timeless production.
